“Apprenticeships are absolutely vital for our economy and our country. They provide businesses with a stable, secure supply line of talent for the future; and they provide apprentices, both younger and older, with the opportunity to get started in a career and build their skills while earning a wage.
There has been such great progress in the last few years, with millions of apprenticeships being created, and a real sense of enthusiasm and success. However it’s still the case that only 15% of businesses have an apprenticeship scheme. This means there’s much more to do in raising awareness of the beneficial impacts apprenticeships can have, for everyone involved.
That’s why events such as today, to celebrate these 1000 apprenticeship vacancy pledges, are so important. Every one of these 1000 apprenticeship opportunities is a chance to change someone’s life, to give them a go, to let them take part and contribute. But they are also an opportunity to change your business, increase the skills available to you and to become more competitive.
It is brilliant to have you all playing your part for apprenticeships, and I hope that you will want to keep doing more. Thank you for coming today, and thank you for taking part and helping to boost apprenticeships, as we move towards 3 million apprenticeship starts by 2020.”
